Blind and visually impaired people can be as competitive as anyone, provided they have access to sports and recreation programs. Few know this better than Sue Lichtenfels, who discovered goalball while attending the University of Pittsburgh. “I loved sports while growing up, but could only watch,” said Lichtenfels, who was born legally blind and had lost all vision by her early 20s.

Her experience with goalball inspired Lichtenfels to explore the possibilities of blind sports participation, an interest she pursued even after a 1993 car accident that left her in a wheelchair. “After my accident, I wanted to start an organization to offer information, education, and accessible recreation programming, “ said Lichtenfels.

With the help of a grant from Western Michigan University, Lichtenfels launched SportsVision in 2001. Through the work of its dedicated team, SportsVision promotes an uplifting message of opportunity through its “IDEAA” approach, an acronym that stands for:
